Meteorological model (KNEP) - short precipitation forecast DESCRIPTION: This data set contains forecast data from the KNEP forecasting model. Knep is a short forecast for precipitation with 1-6 hour forecast lengths. The forecast is based on precipitation amount calculated from radar data that during 6 forecast time steps with adjusted weighting is transferred to either MEPS or ECMWF meteorological forecast model. The model runs every hour. The forecast covers an area across Scandinavia and has a spatial resolution of about 2.5 km. Use: At SMHI, further processed data from KNEP is used as a possible subset in the forecasting model PMP_P. FORMAT: The data is in GRIB edition 1 format. ACCESS THISTORY/PREPARATION: The model tries to create a more consistent precipitation forecast for the first forecast time steps by using radar observations of precipitation. The likely movement of precipitation is calculated using wind speed and direction from meteorological forecast model. With the help of temperature, a calculation is made of the proportion of precipitation that comes in solid form.
