Surface-covering model for solar radiation - STRÅNG
Description
DESCRIPTION
The model system calculates a series of radiation parameters at the ground surface in a grid over northwestern Europe for each hour.
Each square represents an area of 11x11 km (Before 2006-06-01 the resolution was 22*22 km). In this way, we get information about the radiation both over land and out at sea.
The calculations are based on knowledge of the geographical distribution of clouds, water vapour, ozone and the surface albedo.
The calculations are made once a day for the previous day. Data, fields and maps are available from 1999.
Model-calculated data and maps are available for: CIE-weighted UV radiation, Global radiation, Direct radiation, Sunshine time and Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR).
The results show the conditions at every hour (minute 00) around the clock. To calculate the different parameters, STRÅNG needs meteorological data from a number of other models available at SMHI, among others. These models are MESAN, HIRLAM and HIROMB. Ozone information is obtained from the ECMWF or the TOMS satellite instrument.

Coordinates
Coordinates of the area are given by the corners:
48.5N, 10.5W
75.1N, 11.5W
63.3N, 51.6E
The grid cells are 11*11 km.
However, the model has been developed and validated only for Sweden.
USE
STRÅNG data is used to get an idea of how the solar radiation conditions have been for a certain time, in a certain place where there are no observations or over a larger area. Applications can be in meteorology, solar energy, biology, medicine, etc.
FORMAT
Data is delivered in ASCII format.
