Electromagnetic wave sensor
Description
[ Public dictionary](https://data.bordeaux-metropole.fr/dicopub/#/dico#rt_ondeelectro_p)
The dataset provides the measurements carried out by the metropolitan [wave observatory](https://www.observatoiredesondes.com/fr/).
This wave observatory consists of about thirty sensors installed in the municipalities of our territory that measure exposure to waves.
The band of the measured frequencies is very wide since it starts from the FM band (80 MHz) to the highest frequencies of Wi-Fi (6 GHz).
The waves emitted by FM, TV, PMR (professional mobile radio), mobile telephony (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G), Wifi, amateur radio, Bluetooth, microwave, etc. are thus taken into account in the measurements made.
The sensors are installed a few meters high, most of the time on street lamps. It is the municipalities that choose the locations.
They weigh about 1 kg, run on battery and have a 5-year battery life. The measurements made are transmitted on the SIGFOX low-speed network.
Measurements are carried out over a duration of 6 minutes approximately every two hours.
In the context of the rapid digital transformation of our society, this wave observatory is an impartial and reliable tool to inform societal debate.
The volt per metre (V/m) is the unit of measurement of the intensity of an electric field.
Recommendation 1999/19/EC and its [Implementing Decree 2002-775 of 3 May 2002](https://bit.ly/3kpnz5S) define the limit values for exposure to electromagnetic fields for the public in the frequency range from 0 Hz to 300 GHz.
The limited values of exposure to an electric field, depending on the frequencies, are as follows:
**Frequency range
** | **limit value in V/m
**
—|—
0-1 Hz
| —
1-8 Hz
| 10000
8-25 Hz | 10000
0.025-0.8 kHz
| 250/f
0.8-3 kHz
| 250/f
3-150 kHz | 87
0.15-1 MHz
| 87 1-10 MHz
| 87/f1/2
10-400 MHz
| 28 400-2 000 MHz
| 1.375 f1/2
2-300 GHz
| 61
This gives, for example, as limit values:
for a GSM 900 MHz antenna:
41 V/m
for a GSM 1.8 GHz antenna:
58 V/m
for a UMTS antenna:61 V/m
for wifi and microwave ovens:
61 V/m
for FM radio:
28 V/m
for a 5G antenna (3.5 GHz band):61 V/m
For these sensors, it is possible via the Bordeaux Métropole WebServices:
* access current values
* to access the values at a moment T past
* to do data aggregation per day, month, etc.
Historicisation began in September 2021.
A dataset with the [daily wave sensor history](https://opendata.bordeaux-metropole.fr/explore/dataset/rt_ondeelectro_p_histo_jour/information/) is also available.

Attention, for performance reasons, this dataset (Table, Map, Analysis and Export tabs) can be updated less frequently than the source and a discrepancy may exist.
Also we invite you to use our Webservices (see BM Webservices tab) to retrieve the freshest data.
