Equatorial ring sundial by Canivet (Chronometer, 1769)

Description

The equatorial (equinoctial) ring sundial consists of two brass rings and an adjustable traverse and can be used at different latitudes. Due to its versatility, it is also known as a universal ring sundial. On the outer ring (meridian ring) of the front eight, on the inner ring (equator ring) of the front ten, on the outer ring of the back two, i.e. a total of 20 European place names with their latitudes have been engraved, which were arranged alphabetically according to their initial letters (e.g. "Bruxelles . 50 . 50 .", "Madrid . 40 . 26 .", "Marseille . 43 . 18 ." and "Paris 48 51"). Most of them are located in France, which goes well with the production of the sundial in Paris. (Author: Mareike Wöhler 2019)
