Folding sundial by Jacob Karner (folding sundial made of ivory, around 1640)

Description

The folding sundial was made by the Nuremberg compass maker Jacob Karner, born in 1612, who married for the first time in 1634 and then also made his master. This is indicated by the master mark "3" stamped into the ivory in the bottom of the compass bowl and the manufacturer's abbreviation "IK" stamped between the pen gnome of the base plate, which stands for Jacob (Iacob) Karner. The two ivory plates of the folding sundial can be opened at an angle of 90° and fixed with two hooks. Then the clock is aligned in a north-south direction using the compass built into the base plate floor. Now the thread between the two plates stretches so that its shadow falls simultaneously on the scale of the vertical sundial on the inside of the lid (Ib) and the horizon sundial on the top of the base plate (IIa). The vertical sundial shows the hours with Roman numerals (VI-XII-VI, with half-hour stars and quarter-hour points), which are "translated" in the semicircle under the six-pointed star by Arabic numerals (6-12-6). The horizon sundial displays the hours with Arabic numerals (4-12-8, with half-hour stars and quarter-hour points). Under the compass shell there are two smaller sundials, whose shadow is indicated by the central pen gnome: one for the Italian hours counted from sunset (9-23) and one for the Babylonian hours counted from sunrise (1-15).
