NORKAR – Norwegian Cardiovascular Surgery Registry
Description
The Norwegian Cardiovascular Surgery Register (NORKAR) is a national quality registry for vascular surgery and was established by the Norwegian Karsurgical Association (NKKF) in 1995. The register was granted national status in 2009 and is part of the National Cardiovascular Register. The Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) has data responsibility and St. Olavs Hospital is a data processor.
Vascular surgery is a surgical branch specialty that includes the examination and treatment of diseases of the blood vessels, outside of the heart and head. The specialty includes treatment of saturation in blood vessels (aneurysms) and narrowed blood vessels (arteriosclerosis), acute/life-saving and elective/preventive. The largest patient groups in the registry are aneurysms, narrowing of the carotid artery (carotisstenosis) and reduced blood supply to the legs (lower extremities). Patients with this type of disease may have life-threatening complications such as stroke due to narrowing of the carotid artery, pain and ulcers due to impaired blood supply to the legs and bleeding from poop on the main artery.
