INSPIRE - Water supply zones (98/83/EC) in Wallonia (BE)

Description

This data layer includes the public water distribution areas for human consumption in 2016 in Wallonia. The data is presented here in its INSPIRE compliant version. The public water supply zone (PWZ) is established by the European Directive 98/83/EC on the quality of water intended for human consumption (Drinking Water Directive). It is defined in the Water Code as "a geographical area in which water intended for human consumption comes from one or more sources and within which quality is considered to be uniform" (Article D.2, 92°). This is the basic unit of water quality control. It is also the territorial entity to which the contingency plans and possible derogations relate. The water distribution zones are managed by Walloon distributors, namely the Société Wallonne des Eaux (SWDE), inter-municipal authorities and municipal administrations or boards. These distributors are required to provide any consumer who so requests with adequate and up-to-date information on the quality of the water supplied in the distribution area they supply. The total consumption of subscribers sets the minimum frequency of analyses to be carried out. Each distribution area shall integrate the physical distribution network from the output of the treatment units to the consumer’s tap. Five categories of distribution areas are distinguished according to their size expressed by the daily volume distributed: category 0 (less than 10 cubic metres distributed per day), category 1 (between 10 and 100 m3/d), category 2 (between 100 and 400 m3/d), category 3 (between 400 and 1000 m3/d) and the European category (more than 1000 m3/d or serving more than 5,000 inhabitants). For the latter category, a report to the European Commission is mandatory every three years. It should be noted that the large distribution areas (category 3 and EU) are concentrated in the north of Wallonia, while the small areas are located in the south. This data layer is the 2016 version of the water distribution zones and is updated annually. Each zone is identified by a Walloon and European code, the distributor in charge and the category of the zone. The cartographic representation is based on this attribute.
