INSPIRE - Protected sites Wetlands of International Importance in Wallonia (BE)

Description

This series of spatial data layers compiles information from the "Protected Sites" theme whose sites belong to Wetlands of International Importance (RAMSAR Convention). The European Directive 2007/2/EC - INSPIRE Directive - establishes an infrastructure for spatial information in the European Community. INSPIRE applies to 34 thematic areas divided into 3 Annexes. This series includes the spatial data layers referring to protected sites (Annex 1.9). For the purposes of the Directive, protected sites are: "areas designated or managed under international, Community or national legislation with a view to achieving specific conservation objectives". Each protected site may be attached to one or more specific designation mechanisms. Among these mechanisms are protected sites belonging to wetlands of international importance (RAMSAR Convention - 1971). The Ramsar Convention is an intergovernmental treaty that provides a framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. These sites are designated by Orders of the Walloon Government designating Wetlands of International Importance pursuant to the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, done at Ramsar, Iran, on 2 February 1971. Sites designated as wetlands of international importance are extracted from the INSPIRE data layer series ‘Protected sites in Wallonia’, which includes all protected sites. The selection shall be based on the mechanism used for the designation of protected sites, the value of which corresponds to the sites designated under the Ramsar Convention.
