INSPIRE - Quality measurement stations for surface water within the meaning of Directive 2000/60/EC in Wallonia (BE)

Description

This data layer locates the main surface water quality measurement stations in Wallonia. The data shall be disseminated in INSPIRE compliant format. It is a network of monitoring stations managed by the Public Service of Wallonia. Surface water monitoring results from the implementation of Article 8 of the Water Framework Directive (Directive 2000/60/EC). The main objective of this Directive is to achieve good environmental status and good chemical status of the various water bodies constituting the river basins. Water bodies are classified into 5 classes (very good, good, medium, mediocre, bad). In the context of control programmes, the place of measurement - or control site - is an indispensable element. The term "control site" is used to describe the measuring station. It is a place located on a hydrographic entity (rivers, lakes, canals, etc.) on which measurements or samples are taken for physico-chemical, microbiological, etc. analyses in order to determine the quality of aquatic environments at that place. The monitoring site is therefore a place of a body of water which is sufficiently precise to ensure that all the elements measured there reflect the same quality status. This presupposes that no tributaries or particular pressures exist within it. Although a control site is attached to a body of water, it may reflect the state of a nearby body of water just upstream. Exceptionally, the same body of water may also have several control sites (in particular, particularly large bodies of water). In the Walloon Region, the SPW ARNE has established a monitoring programme which includes several types of checks: supervisory control, operational control, additional control and investigation control. This monitoring is carried out by the Department of Surface Waters (SPW - Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment - Department of Environment and Water - Department of Surface Waters) for chemical and physico-chemical parameters and by the Department of Natural and Agricultural Environmental Studies (SPW - Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment - Department of Natural and Agricultural Environmental Studies) for biological indicators.
