INSPIRE - Establishments registered in the Walloon Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR-wallon) in Wallonia (BE)

Description

This INSPIRE data locates the establishments listed in the Walloon Register of emissions and transfers of pollutants into the environment. The Walloon Environmental Pollutant Emissions and Transfers Register (PRTR - Walloon) presents key environmental data from potentially the most polluting industrial establishments in Wallonia. This register is part of Regulation (EC) No 166/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning the establishment of a European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register. This regulation, which entered into force on 24 February 2006 known as the E-PRTR (European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register) regulation, follows the Kiev Protocol signed on 21/03/03. The E-PRTR Regulation This protocol specifies that each member state must publish and make accessible its national PRTR. Given its obligation to provide the Commission with the data required by the PRTR, Member States oblige their companies to submit their environmental data on an annual basis. Therefore, the Walloon register contains the data reported by around 350 Walloon companies in which specific activities take place. These data are verified and validated by experts from the Walloon Region to finally be notified to Europe and published if the thresholds established by Article 5 of the E-PRTR Regulation are exceeded. The information provided relates to emissions and transfers of pollutants (91 key pollutants including heavy metals, pesticides, greenhouse gases, dioxins and volatile organic compounds) to air, water and soil, as well as quantities of waste transferred to recovery or disposal sites. In the Walloon Region, the organisation of the collection and dissemination of information on polluting emissions passes through the "Environmental Reference Framework Integrated Management of Enterprises" (REGINE). This tool has also made it possible to simplify administrative contacts with businesses by collecting all the required information in a single form. The register thus enables public authorities to monitor the evolution of pollutant emissions and transfers and contributes to transparency and public participation in environmental decision-making. The geographical data appears in the form of dots. Each point represents an establishment subject to the E-PRTR Regulation. For the purposes of the E-PRTR Regulation, "establishment" means one or more installations erected on the same site or on adjoining sites which are owned or operated by the same natural or legal person. Each point of establishment is associated with the name of the company, the address, the contact details and the type of activity.
