INSPIRE - Groundwater mass under the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) in Wallonia (BE)

Description

INSPIRE compliant data describing groundwater bodies in the Walloon Region as defined by Article 5 of the Water Framework Directive (DCE-2000/60/EC). The Water Framework Directive (WFD-2000/60/EC) introduces the concept of "groundwater bodies" which it defines as "a separate volume of groundwater within one or more aquifers" (Article 5 and Annex II). According to the same Framework Directive, an aquifer represents "one or more underground layers of rock or other geological layers of sufficient porosity and permeability to allow either a significant flow of groundwater or the abstraction of significant quantities of groundwater". Groundwater bodies, as defined in the WFD, can be delineated according to both hydrogeological and non-hydrogeological criteria. Groundwater body boundaries may also take into account requirements related to the management of the body of water itself. The criteria used are: a. Hydrogeological criteria: - Extent and characteristics of geological layers; - Feeding zone; - Separation line for underground flows; - Hydraulic connection between geological layers; - Interaction with surface waters and associated terrestrial ecosystems; - Hydrochemical properties, - Distinction between free and captive tablecloths. b. Non-hydrogeological criteria: - Capture or the possibility of capture; - Impact of pressures, both abstraction and pollution, on water bodies, terrestrial ecosystems and damage to layers or non-movable property on the earth’s surface (such as subsidence); - Surface water divide; - Administrative limits Each body of groundwater is characterized by a material safety data sheet, available on the Water Framework Directive website. Groundwater body fiches are intended to specify the state of play of river basin districts by identifying, as far as possible, the specific character of each body of water. The designation and first characterization of groundwater bodies required the prior adoption of a methodology. This was drawn up by the Administration (SPW – SPW ARNE) and the former Groundwater Observatory in consultation between the relevant departments of the SPW – SPW ARNE and the former MET (SPW MI – Directorate-General for Mobility and Waterways). Finally, coordination for the border water bodies was ensured with the Flemish, French, German and Dutch administrations within the framework of the International Commissions for the Meuse, Scheldt and Rhine. The methodology was approved on 10 December 2003 by the Permanent Platform for Integrated Water Management (PPGIE). In April 2017, the groundwater body RWE031 was split into 2 new water bodies RWE033 and RWE034 (based on the difference in pressures and observed alterations). The data was re-reported in March 2022. The data layer is symbolised according to the type of groundwater bodies: either higher (the shallower) or lower.
