INSPIRE - Subsoil technical potential of closed shallow geothermal systems in Wallonia (BE)

Description

This INSPIRE data layer illustrates the technical potential of shallow closed geothermal systems in Wallonia. This INSPIRE compliant data layer is derived from the business data Subsoil technical potential of shallow closed geothermal systems (https://geoportail.wallonie.be/catalogue/4e59e821-4d8f-4177-ba69-76129c5d70f7.html). The potential is presented according to 2 classes of thermal conductivity (class A below 2.2 W/m.K and class B above 2.2 W/m.K). The potential is qualitatively determined from the intersection of the previous criteria and involves the following steps: 1. Assessment of the thermal conductivity of the subsoil (Class A and B) 2. Discrimination of less favourable areas within Class A (threshold at 50 m) 3. Saturation of the land (threshold at 50m (variable criterion in the DEA)) From the geological data and the hydrogeological and thermal properties collected, it was possible to estimate the technical potential for each of the geothermal systems (open and closed). This potential is determined with a resolution that depends on that of the input data. The approach to determine the potential is mainly based on the evaluation of the thermal conductivity of the subsoil, the thickness of the least conductive (relative) terrain and the identification of areas for which the gross potential would be favourable or very favourable taking into account the saturation of the terrain. It should be noted that, in view of the data collected, the gross potential is favourable throughout Wallonia for the installation of geothermal probes. This data was produced during the public service contract for the determination of the potential of shallow geothermal energy (less than 500m) for the production of heating and cooling in Wallonia. 2022 contract initialised by SPW Energie. A consortium of Walloon institutions (Uliège, Geogreen, Geological Survey of Belgium and Deplasse et Associés) coordinated by VITO (Flemish Institution for Technological Research) carried out the project. The users targeted for these maps are mainly consultancy firms, underground experts, local authorities, regional policy makers, investors and the general public.
