INSPIRE - Centreline surface water mass under the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) in Wallonia (BE)

Description

This data layer takes the sections of surface water bodies considered by the Water Framework Directive in Wallonia. This data layer is presented here in its INSPIRE compliant version. The body of water in the broad sense is a concept introduced by the European Water Framework Directive (WFD - Directive 2000/60/EC). This is the elementary unit for characterizing the aquatic environment. This concept is better suited to the management of water resources within large-scale river basins (International Hydrographic Districts). Each District has a Hydrographic District Management Plan (DHMP). This data layer corresponds to the spatial objects identified by the WFD as surface water bodies (SWBs), i.e. "a distinct and significant part of surface water, such as a lake, reservoir, river, river or canal, part of river, river or canal, transitional water or part of coastal water". As a result, the surface water body corresponds to a water resources management unit. In Wallonia, surface waters are mainly waterways (rivers, streams) and dam reservoirs. Each body of surface water is represented linearly, including the reservoirs for which the axis of the body of water is considered. The network of surface water bodies is subdivided into homogeneous sections ("CENTRELINES") in order to ensure compliance with the relevant European specifications (cf. European Water Information System - WISE - and the INSPIRE Directive). The boundaries of a stretch can be a confluence, the presence of an island, a vaulted or underground passage. The code for each CENTRELINE section is structured as follows: Country code (2 letters) + code identifying the Walloon Region and the year of revision of the water bodies (RW+ 2 digits) + river basin code of the management plan (2 letters) + a serial number (2 digits) + the category of the water body in question (R: River, C: Channel, L: Tank) + the serial number of the section (_2 digits overall from upstream to downstream). This structure corresponds to the concept of WISE. Only water bodies from watersheds larger than 10 km2 are included in this layer. Nevertheless, the linear at the source of each body of water is taken.
