INSPIRE - Natura 2000 protected sites in Wallonia (BE)

Description

This series of spatial data layers compiles information from the theme "Protected sites" whose sites belong to the Natura 2000 network in Wallonia. The European Directive 2007/2/EC - INSPIRE Directive - establishes an infrastructure for spatial information in the European Community. INSPIRE applies to 34 thematic areas divided into 3 Annexes. This series includes the spatial data layers referring to protected sites (Annex 1.9). For the purposes of the Directive, protected sites are: "areas designated or managed under international, Community or national legislation with a view to achieving specific conservation objectives". Each protected site may be attached to one or more specific designation mechanisms. Among these mechanisms are protected sites belonging to the Natura 2000 network. Natura 2000 is a European ecological network of natural protected areas (peatlands, forests, rivers, rocks, caves), semi-natural (flowered meadows, dry lawns, heaths, etc.) or used as habitat specific to certain animal or plant species. The overall objective of this network is to maintain the biodiversity of the environment by defining a common framework for the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora on the territory of the Member States. The "Natura 2000" sites are proposed by the Member States, in application of the European "Birds" (2009) and "Habitats" (1992) directives, which constitute the legal basis for the project. From 2002 to 2005, the Walloon Government defined 240 Natura 2000 sites (GW Decision - 24 March 2005), representing some 221,000 ha, or 13% of Walloon territory. These sites are composed of forests (leafy, coniferous, mixed), agricultural land, wetlands and rivers. The sites designated as belonging to the Natura 2000 network are extracted from the INSPIRE data layer series "Protected sites in Wallonia" which includes all protected sites. The selection is based on the mechanism used for the designation of protected sites whose value corresponds to the sites belonging to the Natura 2000 network.
