INSPIRE - Green links in Wallonia (BE)

Description

This dataset includes ecological links in INSPIRE compliant format. This compliant data is part of the Supplementary Regulation feature concept, i.e. any spatial object (point, line, polygon) of a spatial planning document that contains additional information and/or limitations on land/water use, necessary for spatial planning reasons or to formalise external rules defined in legislation. Ecological linkages are the elements of the ecological network that play a major role at different scales in the long-term survival of plant and animal species. They are drawn up taking into account two criteria: their biological value and the continuity of a coherent ecological network on the scale of the regional territory. The objective of the Walloon Government is to determine the ecological links of regional scale or importance that make it possible to connect the sites recognized under the Nature Conservation Act. It is a question of preserving them and avoiding any fragmentation or artificialization of the additional territory. The identification of ecological links throughout the territory of Wallonia also contributes to the fulfilment of two commitments by the European Union, namely: halting the loss of biodiversity in the Union by 2020 and protecting, assessing and restoring biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Union by 2050. Five types of ecological links are thus identified at the regional level in order to network the characteristic natural environments of high biological value: • deciduous forest massifs, • limestone lawns and associated environments, • Ardennes ridges, • the high Ardennes valleys, • the alluvial plains typical of the wide valleys of the hydrographic network.
