INSPIRE - Underground technical potential of open shallow geothermal systems in Wallonia (BE)

Description

This INSPIRE data layer represents the net potential of shallow open geothermal systems in Wallonia. This INSPIRE compliant data layer is derived from the business data Subsoil technical potential of shallow open geothermal systems (https://geoportail.wallonie.be/catalogue/45f97ecc-abe7-4fde-b000-2d2d02fb4263.html). Due to the absence of certain information, in particular on specific flows per aquifer or the superposition of aquifers – this information is unfortunately not available on the basis of the geological and hydrogeological maps available to date in Wallonia – the net potential of open shallow geothermal systems has been calculated in the following steps: - Assignment of possible production rates by lithology on the basis of the information defined in the database from the SERAN project - Crossover with map data of lithologies to assign in each cell a possible production flow value - Determination of the depth of the aquifer/aquifer based on the map of the thickness of the unsaturated area or the depth of the roof of the aquifers From the geological data and the hydrogeological and thermal properties collected, it was possible to estimate the technical potential for each of the geothermal systems (open and closed). This potential is determined with a resolution that depends on that of the input data. This data was produced during the public service contract for the determination of the potential of shallow geothermal energy (less than 500m) for the production of heating and cooling in Wallonia. 2022 contract initialised by SPW Energie. A consortium of Walloon institutions (Uliège, Geogreen, Geological Survey of Belgium and Deplasse et Associés) coordinated by VITO (Flemish Institution for Technological Research) carried out the project. The users targeted for these maps are mainly consultancy firms, underground experts, local authorities, regional policy makers, investors and the general public.
