The Labyrinth of the Torres Strait: A proposal for the development of scientific material for audiovisual transfer. Selection of bibliographic and documentary sources [DATASET]
Description
The producer and distributor of cinema, and great fan of history, Javier de Garcillán, discovered fortuitously, in a study on the geographer Alexander Dalrymple, the expedition led by Pedro Fernández de Quirós in 1605. This expedition, whose command would end up in the hands of the pilot of the second ship, Luis Báez de Torres, after the abandonment of Quirós and his return to Acapulco, would lead to the discovery of the strait in 1606, which would later take the name of the pilot, Strait of Torres. The strangeness and surprise caused in Garcillán by the intranscendence of this fact, together with the almost absence of studies of Spanish historiography on this ‘seafaring feat’, stimulated the curiosity of the distributor. Around 1998, he began a work of gathering sources that led him to visit from the great archives, libraries and bookstores of our country to the most important in the Australian continent, through all those of any country (Italy, the United States, Great Britain ...) in which he could ‘discover’ new documents that shed light on this historical fact and that facilitated ‘access’ to the labyrinth. His objective ‘the publication of a large-format book and dissemination in a commercial publisher that served as the basis for the preparation and distribution of a documentary film’ was unfortunately cut short with the death of Javier de Garcillán in 2007. In 2013, this extensive documentary collection arrived at the CCHS - CSIC by the hand of researcher Ana Rodríguez and producer López Li Films. In it we have ‘dived’ in order to highlight those sources that ‘illuminate’ the process of discovery
