Wastewater analysis - COVID-19

Description

On December 15, 2021, the COVID-19 Early Warning project in Wastewater of Castilla y León was completed, which has been developed in our Community since December 2020. The information provided by this project, and presented to the population through the ATARCYL platform (Alerta Temprana Aguas Residuales Castilla y León), has allowed to know the circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in municipalities with a population of more than 10,000 inhabitants, being an indicator of usefulness in the management of the pandemic in 2020-2021. From now on, the analysis of wastewater from Castilla y León will soon be integrated into the national HEBAR project, ERDF funding and coordinated by the Ministry of Health. Until then, data from the wastewater analysis of the provincial capitals Segovia, Soria and Valladolid, included in the VATar project, can be found in . The detection of SARS-COV-2 in wastewater is a complementary tool for health decision-making.The results should be treated with appropriate caution, since the quantification of the presence of SARS-COV-2 in wastewater is affected by other environmental variables such as rain events, temperature, hydraulic retention time in sewers, sample transport to the laboratory, sampling time, etc. A unique relationship cannot be established between the SARS-COV-2 value in the wastewater and the number of infected because it depends on the virulence of the infection in each patient. Therefore, weekly trends are published instead of absolute values, and they must be verified with other epidemiological surveillance indicators to know the evolution of the epidemic in the study area. The monitoring network comprises a total of 23 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which have been selected according to the criteria of municipalities of Castilla y León with a population equal to or greater than 10,000 inhabitants, seeking the largest assisted population and territorial balance. The sewerage basins of Segovia, Soria and Valladolid are part of the national VATAR project. The results of the investigation of wastewater in the Region of Castilla y León, relating to the sewerage basins of Segovia, Soria and Valladolid -Project VATAR- and other basins analyzed, should not be compared with each other, because they come from different laboratories even following the same analytical method. The data generated by this monitoring network on wastewater are public, and any use of them should cite this source, by the following reference: JCyL/ Consejería de Sanidad/ DGSP.
