2748|CHARACTERISTICS AND ATTITUDES OF THE IMMIGRANT POPULATION IN SPAIN

Description

The purpose of the study is to explore the discourses around the immigrant population installed in Spain from the points of view of the immigrants themselves. The general result is a proposal of four basic positions around the installation in Spain: subaltern insertion, egalitarian integration, defensive retreat and instituent projection. In each case different implicit models of society are drawn: monocultural, pluricultural, intracultural and transcultural. The objectives are: how the different segments of the immigrant population perceive and interpret their migration trajectory and future perspectives (how to understand their migrant status), and the relationships they establish with each other and with the groups and institutions of indigenous society. - Migratory itinerary: reasons for migration (differentiation between men and women, adults, young people and minors); ways of leaving the country and entering Spain (personal bet or project family); stay in Spain (transit due to regularity or irregularity); perception and project on family reunification; project or implementation of the third phase (nationalisation and/or return); dissolution of the migrant status (nationalisation and/or return). - Insertion strategies: employment (differentiation between men and women, between first and second generation, etc. Complementary, competitive, ethnostratified and critical. Special attention to the work itinerary, from irregularity to the acquisition of papers); residential (accommodation or not to the majority tendency of the natives towards the ownership of housing, maintenance or provisionality of the situation of shared housing with other family nuclei); training-occupational (situation according to age groups and sex, work experience, etc.); cultural (perception of relations with the country and culture of origin, with relatives residing in the same or communities of origin in Spain. Relations between the culture of origin and the existing culture(s) in Spain). - Relations with the Spanish institutions: institutions for regulating migration, caring for the citizen and providing general services (perception of the treatment received in them by the fact of being an immigrant and the experience of the 'fetishism' of the papers); degree of confidence or distrust in them regarding self-perceptions of citizens' rights and duties and the main factors for coexistence and integration of migration. - Relations with other population groups: relations with the indigenous population (assimilation, respect, confinement, recognition), with various groups of immigrants (immigrants from behind nationalities and from the group itself: the main contexts in which they take place); perceptions regarding the attitudes that the indigenous population shows them (between reception and xenophobia). - Social participation and citizen involvement: interest and level of association between immigrants of the same nationality or with other immigrants and natives; self-perceptions of citizens' rights and duties and of the main factors for coexistence and integration of migration; opinion on the vote of immigrants and interest, if any, to access and exercise that right. Various ways of understanding citizenship status: subordinated, equated, denied and participant. Each position establishes a specific form of relationship with social policies.
