National Air Quality Index
Description
The National Air Quality Index (AQI) makes it possible to check, in real time and in a simple way, the air quality marked by the national monitoring network’s measuring stations. The ICA also includes health recommendations for the general population and the sensitive population, and allows to know the evolution of the state of air quality in recent months.
The index uses real-time data, i.e. provisional and non-validated data, from monitoring stations and reported every hour by air quality networks operating in the national territory, these data are supplemented, if necessary, by modeled data from the Atmospheric Surveillance Service (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring System – CAMS) of the European Union. It should be borne in mind that these data are not verified and could therefore differ from the data contained in the official air quality reports prepared by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
The ICA defines 6 air quality categories: good, reasonably good, regular, unfavorable, very unfavorable, and extremely unfavorable. Each station is assigned the worst category in terms of air quality of any of the pollutants that are considered for estimation, whether measured or derived from the CAMS model. The pollutants considered in the index are: Suspended particulates (PM10), Suspension particles (PM2.5), tropospheric ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2).
The design of the index allows the data to be filtered by the type of station. Stations are classified according to the predominant emission sources: traffic stations, industrial stations and background stations (where the level of pollution is not dominated by traffic or industry).
The index is calculated for all measuring stations with data from at least one pollutant, but stations that do not have data on all pollutants are indicated with index values multiplied by 10.
