Grouped islands for Statistical Information (Iris) version Rennes Métropole
Description
In order to prepare the dissemination of the 1999 population census, INSEE had developed a division of the territory into homogeneous meshes called Iris2000. An acronym that meant "Grouped Islands for Statistical Information" and that referred to the target size of 2,000 inhabitants per elemental mesh.
Since then, Iris (a name that now replaces Iris2000) has been the basic building block for the dissemination of infra-municipal data. It must respect geographical and demographic criteria and have identifiable contours that are unambiguous and stable over time.
Municipalities with at least 10 000 inhabitants and a high proportion of municipalities with between 5 000 and 10 000 inhabitants are divided into Iris. This division constitutes a partition of their territory. France has about 16,100 Iris, 650 of which are in the French overseas departments.
By extension, in order to cover the whole territory, we assimilate to an Iris each of the communes not cut into Iris.
There are three types of Iris:
\- Habitat irises: their population is generally between 1 800 and 5 000 inhabitants. They are homogeneous in terms of habitat type and their limits are based on major cuts in the urban fabric (main roads, railways, watercourses, etc.).
\- Activity irises: they have more than 1 000 employees and at least twice as many salaried jobs as the resident population.
\- Miscellaneous Iris: these are large, specific, sparsely inhabited areas with a large surface area (recreational parks, port areas, forests, etc.).
In order to align the contours of the various management zonings (neighbourhood, electoral perimeters, etc.), Rennes Métropole has digitized the Iris based on internal referentials (in particular the Referential of Ways and Addresses RVA UUID = aaff85f2-3529-4a0e-a263-95ad355acbc3). As a result of the evolution of the municipalities since the implementation of the Iris, some contours have been revised accordingly. As a result, this layer is not the official layer provided by INSEE (see the description of the genealogy) but allows to be crossed with data of high geographical accuracy.
