(SRCE) Linear Ecological Infrastructures
Description
The linear infrastructures taken into account in the analysis of the Regional Ecological Coherence Scheme (SRCE) for the Pays de la Loire are mainly transport infrastructures, composed of road and rail networks. Several criteria make it possible to qualify the fragmenting character of this type of work: road traffic, width or number of lanes, track equipment: the presence of closure essentially.
Linear infrastructures were classified according to their fragmenting potential and an ecological disturbance zone was associated with them to indicate disturbances generated on nearby natural and semi-natural environments.
Sources: Daily traffic of all types of vehicles (2008, DREAL Pays de la Loire), Number of tracks per section (2008, DREAL Pays de la Loire, CETE), Rail traffic (2010, RFF), Closing presence on the railway network (2010, RFF), Set of Linear Railways (IGN, BD TOPO), Large Infrastructure Projects (DREAL Pays de la Loire).
Linear network prioritisation: The more widely discussed and documented “traffic density” criterion appears to be the main criterion for prioritising different fragmentation classes. The “number of tracks” criterion has been discarded because its own impact on the mortality of different species is poorly documented. The “equipment” criterion has been used only for railways, as roads are not filled in.
Associated ecological disturbance zone: Once the linear was qualified, a buffer zone was associated with it to quantify its “fragmentation potential”. Ideally, the identification of ecological disturbance areas associated with anthropogenic elements should be assessed based on the nature of neighbouring habitats. Given the complex nature of certain reservoirs of biodiversity (associated with several sub-trames), and in the interests of simplification, the potential for disruption has been classified according to the nature of the work. This “buffer strip” makes it possible to represent in a surfacically the ecological disturbance associated with the structure at first, and thus to calculate the state of degradation of the biodiversity reservoirs. Therefore, “fragmentation indices” have been assigned to the reservoirs of biodiversity (high, medium and low), depending on the probability that two points of the area studied (here the reservoirs) are located in an unfragmented area (Jaeger index, 2000).
Fragmentation Level 3: Road traffic of DREAL Pays de la Loire (in number of vehicles per day) providing moderate traffic connections.
