Bilingual street plaques in Mulhouse
Description
This dataset identifies Mulhouse tracks that have a bilingual denomination (French and Alsatian).
The EXISTING BILINGUE PLAQUE field indicates whether the installation of the bilingual plaque is effective on the street.
As part of the promotion of regional language and culture, bilingual signage, in French and Alsatian, developed in Mulhouse since the early 1990s, making it a pioneer in Alsace. Since the first bilingual plaque inaugurated for Rue du Sauvage/Wìldemànnsgàss in 1991, 266 have been installed to date.
The thematic working group “Bilingual Places” of the Dankfàwrìk, Mulhouse’s Regional Language and Culture Advisory Commission, is conducting concerted reflections to develop the designations of roads, passageways, streets and boulevards in different districts of Mulhouse.
These can be literal translations but also inspired by history or local uses.
