Attraction areas of the 2020 cities filtered on the Occitanie Region (Region code 76) The area of attraction of a city is a group of municipalities, contiguous and without an enclave, which defines the extent of the influence of a population and employment centre on the surrounding municipalities, this influence being measured by the intensity of commuting. The zoning in areas of attraction of cities succeeds the zoning in urban areas of 2010. An area consists of a pole and a crown. The poles are determined mainly on the basis of density and total population criteria, following a methodology consistent with that of the municipal density grid. A jobs threshold is added to avoid that predominantly residential municipalities, with few jobs, are considered as hubs. Within the pole, the most populous commune is called commune-centre. If one pole sends at least 15% of its assets to work in another pole of the same level, the two poles are associated and together form the core of an area of attraction. Municipalities that send at least 15% of their assets to work in the cluster constitute the crown of the area. The definition of the largest areas of attraction of cities is consistent with that of ‘cities’ and ‘functional urban areas’ used by Eurostat and the OECD to analyse the functioning of cities. The zoning of cities into catchment areas thus facilitates international comparisons and makes it possible to visualise the influence of large foreign cities in France. Thus, seven areas have as their commune-centre a city located abroad (Basel, Charleroi, Geneva, Lausanne, Luxembourg, Monaco and Saarbrücken). The areas are classified according to the total number of inhabitants of the area in 2017. The main thresholds chosen are: Paris, 700,000 inhabitants, 200,000 inhabitants and 50,000 inhabitants. Areas whose hub is located abroad are classified in the category corresponding to their total population (French and foreign). The attraction areas of the cities, dated 2020, were built with reference to the commuting known in the 2016 census. Area of attraction of cities 2017: This code indicates the size range of the attraction area of cities according to the 2017 Census of Population. In the case of international catchment areas, foreign municipalities are also taken into account.
