Zero pesticide target in Île-de-France 2015
Description
Pesticides (biocides, weed killers, insecticides, fungicides, etc.) are among the main causes of biodiversity loss in Île-de-France. While the responsibility lies largely with intensive agriculture and the management of transport infrastructure, communities, businesses and individuals also use these products in non-agricultural areas, which has a definite impact on the environment and human health. However, when these substances are used in urban environments, heavily waterproofed, they are massively driven by rain to rivers and alter the drinking water resource. They inevitably lead to profound changes in the environment.
By stopping the use of pesticides in the areas for which they are responsible, local authorities are acting in two ways in favour of biodiversity. On the one hand, they reduce their impact on the environment and, by their exemplary nature, they act as prescribers and relays to their private individuals or businesses.
Four levels of practice are identified, thanks to a questionnaire filled in by the authorities:
* Zero total pesticide (Category 1)
* Zero pesticides except on restricted areas (category 2, use on sports fields and/or cemeteries)
* Discount committed (category 3, use on roads and/or green spaces and flowering)
* Usual use (category 4, no reduction approach undertaken)
* Not specified (category 5)
For the following areas, the municipality indicates whether it still uses YES or NO pesticides (regardless of the quantity) to manage them (directly or indirectly) or whether it is NOT CONCERNED by their management:
* Roads
* Green spaces
* Flowering
* Sports fields
* Historical gardens
* Cemeteries
