Simplified Nomenclature IPC Patent Codes
Description
Each patent contains IPC (International Patent Classification) codes assigned by the Examining Office, which indicate in a very detailed tree structure the technical field to which the invention relates: The IPC divides the technology into eight sections with approximately **70,000** subdivisions. It is a hierarchical system of language-independent symbols for classifying patents according to the different technological fields to which they belong.Since this nomenclature is difficult to use, the technological classification used is the simplified classification established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) which groups the IPC technological classes into 5 technological fields and 35 technological sub-fields which correspond to the field of application of the invention (and not to the sector of economic activity).
