Thesaurus of Christian iconography

Description

The Thesaurus of Christian iconography develops in a methodical form nearly 2,500 terms useful for indexing the representation of the Old and New Testaments and the lives of the saints. This tool was designed to help researchers identify scenes and figures from Christian iconography. Each term describes a religious scene: it is associated with general or specific terms, synonyms, the main sources of knowledge of the event, reference to other iconographic classifications (Iconclass and Réau), as well as various clarifications (biography of the saint concerned, place of main cults, keywords, etc.). For some scenes, the models broadcast by engraving are mentioned. This work was undertaken to enrich François Garnier’s iconographic Thesaurus (Le Leopard d’Or, 1984). It was carried out between the late 1980s and the early 1990s as part of the Directorate for Architecture and Heritage at the Ministry of Culture. Her main collaborators have been Hélène Verdier, Véronique Frandon Violaine Wittmer, Catherine Dubo▲-Lahonde.
