Mill surveys from 1794 to 1809
Description
Three statistical surveys of flour mills were carried out by the State in the years II (1794), X (1801) and 1809. It is for the government to evaluate the means of production of flours, both quantitatively (product volume), qualitative (quality of flours, road networks nearby) but also prospective (material state of the mills, seasonal variation). The surveys of 1794 and 1809 are national in scope; that of 1801 concerns the 8 departments that supply Paris.
* the survey of 1794 lists more than 6,800 mills spread over 72 departments;
* that of 1801, about 4460 mills for 8 departments (supply from Paris);
* that of 1809, nearly 9,000 mills for 115 departments (including the departments of the Empire located today in Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Italy).
These statistical data by department are not exhaustive: sub-prefectures have not responded to the surveys and some districts are incomplete, or their data are not exhaustive. Thirteen departments are not included in any of the three surveys (Ardèche, Cher, Corsica, Haute-Garonne, Loire, Haute-Loire, Marne, Mayenne, Rhône, Sarthe, Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Deux-Sèvres).
Nevertheless, this dataset by municipality, resulting from the detailed inventory drawn up by Mr Illaire at the National Archives, constitutes a significant body of information on the French economic and energy landscape at the dawn of the 19th century. The inventory information has been aligned as much as possible with the current municipalities to allow geolocation for most municipalities. The dataset made available consists of the following information:
* Countries;
* Current common (when initial data allow);
* Current department;
* Date of investigation;
* Type of mill (mainly water or wind);
* Number of mills;
* Name of mill;
* Old department (19th century);
* Old town (19th century);
* Initial description (in 1998 inventory before back-conversion of data);
* URL of the notice on the National Archives portal;
* File rating;
* INSEE code (for France, according to the current municipality).
The geolocation proposed here is made from the French municipalities and their INSEE code; the 562 locations located today outside the French borders therefore do not contain geolocation data.
