Mills and millers in 1801

Three investigations into flour mills were carried out by the State between the years II (1794) and 1809. The survey of the year X (1801) concerns more specifically the supply of Paris. The replies include, in addition to the expected economic and statistical information, the list of millers. This survey concerns only 8 departments (Aisne, Eure, Eure-et-Loir, Loiret, Marne, Oise, Seine, Seine-et-Marne and Seine-et-Oise), still representing 5157 mills.

The dataset made available comes from a nominative index drawn up in the 1990s by Mr Illaire (consultable online). The following information shall be listed for each mill:

• name of miller;

• sucker’s first name (if applicable);

• common exercise;

• department;

• type of mill (water or wind);

• name of mill;

• possible comments;
• URL of the notice on the National Archives portal;
• rating.

A miller who can own several mills, an individual may have several entrances.
