National Security Central Files (1870-1940)

Description

The [central file of the National Security](https://www.siv.archives-nationales.culture.gouv.fr/siv/IR/FRAN_IR_050044), one of the “Moscow funds”, seized by the Germans in 1940 and then by the Red Army before being returned between 1994 and 2001, is one of the emblematic holdings of the National Archives. This corpus of archives of the Ministry of the Interior consists of more than 600000 nominative police files of the Third Republic (1870-1940), which concern: * political oversight; * administrative control of foreigners; * individuals who have applied for a passport and identity card; * persons wanted or convicted by the courts (residence ban); * the game police (prohibited games, professionals working in circles and games). Between 2020 and 2022, a collaborative project of the National Archives in partnership with [Geneanet](https://www.archives-nationales.culture.gouv.fr/geneanet) and its volunteers made it possible to fully index nominative records from semi-alphabetic directories developed by Russian archivists in the 1970s. All the data, searchable on the [documentary portal of the National Archives](https://www.siv.archives-nationales.culture.gouv.fr/siv/IR/FRAN_IR_050044), are proposed here in open data in order to promote its exploitation and reuse. The dataset made available shall contain the following information: * Name; * Forenames; * Year of start of application; * Year of completion of the file; * Wikidata: identification of personalities; * File rating; * Dossier number; * URL of the notice on the National Archives portal; * Content: empty folder or referral to other resources. The spelling of surnames and first names can sometimes be incorrect (period transcription by French police officers, phonetic variants, reading by Russian archivists, or even error of transcription by French archivists and volunteers). Records with no date indication are usually empty. The time cover can give an indication of the thickness of the folder and the type of folder: an “administrative police” file (control of foreigners, passport procedures or identity card) is often quite fine and covers only one to two years; the surveillance of well-known personalities (political, literary, militant) often gives rise to cases with extreme dates of more than 5 years. The information in the “Wikidata” column is not exhaustive. It identifies the files of personalities that may have been found during historical research or during collaborative indexing. These include political and trade union figures, feminists, Esperantists and anarchists. This data is expected to be updated as future reports occur.
