Description
The data product Rail is a visualization of the physical rails in the railway network. A rail is the rail made of steel on which the railway vehicle rolls. The rail has several functions; mainly to support the weight of the trainsets and distribute it to the substructure and to steer the axles. Another important function for rails on electrified tracks is to be the carrier of signal for line blocking (see more in Data Product Specification Line Blocking). The rail is also the recovery medium for the return currents of the train operation. Since the physical rail has so many functions, it is important to have high-quality data about the object. The object type Rail provides information that is required primarily for inspections and maintenance work. Inspections check, for example, that the rail is not worn out, which would cause safety risks when driving vehicles on the track. The data product has a stretch distribution and connects to the network with reference to the immediately preceding node and the immediately preceding kilometre board with distance in metres in the direction of the track link with indication of the lateral position of the object in relation to the direction of the track link (right ⁇ left).
