Geophysical aerial measurements, gamma radiation (overview)

Description

Gamma radiation is part of the human natural environment. Part of the radiation comes from the ground below us, that is, from the bedrock and soil types. Geophysical flight measurements, gamma radiation (overview) contains interpolated values from the more detailed measurement of gamma radiation, which is also available, in an even 200 x 200 m grid. This grid should only be used for regional studies of gamma radiation distribution. The information concerns concentrations of the naturally occurring radioactive isotopes K-40 (potassium), U-238 (uranium) and Th-232 (thorium), at the top of the soil. The concentrations are calculated from measurements made from aircraft at low altitude. The values in a point represent a calculated mean over a number of measurement points that represent the conditions over a larger area of the ground. For uranium and thorium, radiometric equilibrium has been assumed in the decay chain.
