NVDB Functional road class
Description
Functional road class is a classification of the road network based on how important a road is for the overall road network's connectivity. Classes 0-9, with Class 0 being the most important roads and Class 9 the least important roads. The classification is general for all types of traffic. The purpose of the Functional Road Class is to create a hierarchical classification of roads for traffic management, based on how important a road is for the overall road network's connectivity. The classification aims to lead traffic from a poorer to a better road network. This is done on the basis of the function of the roads in the total road network. The classification can be used as an important parameter for automated route selection calculations. Often such calculations are also based on other parameters such as traffic rules and physical restrictions. In road-choice calculation systems, it is important to ‘find out’ a road with as ‘good’ functional road class as possible as quickly as possible. Good in this context means as low class as possible on the 0-9 scale where 0 is the best.
