Geophysical flight measurements, gamma radiation (detailed)
Description
Gamma radiation is part of the human natural environment. Part of the radiation comes from the ground below us, that is, from the bedrock and soil types. Geophysical flight measurements, gamma radiation (detailed) contain information on the concentrations of the naturally occurring radioactive isotopes K-40 (potassium), U-238 (uranium) and Th-232 (torium), in the top parts of the soil. The concentrations are calculated from measurements made from aircraft at low altitude. The measured values at a measuring point represent the average over a larger area of the ground down to a few decimeters depth. For uranium and thorium, radiometric equilibrium has been assumed in the decay chain.
