Environmental monitoring of ionising radiation: radioactive substances in drinking water
Description
Since the Chernobyl accident in 1986, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority has sampled drinking water and measured levels of radioactive substances, mainly Cs-137. In the current programme, drinking water is sampled from 6 waterworks twice a year, which is measured for caesium-137, strontium-90, tritium (H-3), total-alpha, total-beta and radium-226. Concentrations in water intended for human consumption are also reported to the EU in accordance with the Euratom Treaty. Data from 2001 onwards from these sampling stations are available on the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority's website. The map shows the geographical location of the sampling stations (waterworks).
