Description

Bodies of water refer to a stagnant, free surface continental freshwater body of natural or anthropogenic origin of varying depth. They may have thermal stratification characteristics. The term water body covers a number of situations commonly referred to as lakes, reservoirs, ponds, gravel pits, quarries or marshes. The definitions attached to these different situations are numerous and often refer to uses: - A lake is a body of water located in a natural depression where the duration of residence of the waters and the depth are sufficient to define a pelagic zone and where, from spring to autumn, a stable thermal stratification is established. (RMC basin network) Mass of naturally accumulated continental water - deep enough, it usually has a stable thermal stratification (circular n°91-50 1991). - A reservoir is an artificial water body with a specific purpose: hydroelectricity, low water support, irrigation, drinking water supply. Generally these bodies of water are characterized by an irregular depth, a variable level (marnage) and a homogeneous body of water. (RMC basin network) Mass of water artificially created by a dam (dike) located or not on a watercourse. May have the characteristics of thermal stratification and vegetation development similar to that of a lake or pond (circular n°91-50 1991). - A pond is a body of water of natural or artificial origin, of shallow depth without stable thermal stratification. It is fed mainly by its rain basin. (RMC basin network) Mass of continental water whose accumulation is sometimes natural but more often artificial. In most cases its primary vocation is or has been fish farming. The shallow depth does not allow thermal stratification and makes it possible to develop fixed vegetation over its entire extent (circular n°91-50 1991). - A gravel pit is a body of water of artificial origin created by extraction of aggregates and fed essentially by the water table. (RMC basin network) Mass of water created by the extraction of aggregates in the alluvial plain of a watercourse and fed mainly by the alluvial aquifer (circular n°91-50 1991). - A quarry is an open pit mining operation (Le petit Robert, 1992) - A marsh is a group of wetlands where the surface stagnant water table is generally shallow. (IFEN 2000) (MATE 2001). For the purposes of hydrographic coding, a territory without significant relief irrigated or drained by a dense network of canals and/or arms and which may include bodies of water (circular n°91-50 1991). However, the implementation of the Water Framework Directive requires a typology of environments based on natural criteria. It is therefore appropriate not to refer to uses in the definitions of types of bodies of water, even if types and uses are sometimes linked. The typology developed for bodies of water of category "body of water" is therefore now a reference. A body of water is identified by its hydrographic code as defined in the hydrographic repository and its cartographic declination BD Carthage. Any plan must therefore be identified in advance in the hydrographic reference system. This code is constituted as follows: [first 4 characters the corresponding hydro zone if fully included in a zone or code of the subsector + "-" if several zones, or sector code +'--' or region code + '---'] + [order number 3 characters] + [3, which corresponds to the middle body of water] (source: Circular on Hydrographic Coding). A body of water is always represented in the form of one or more polygons entered in the Carthage comic. A body of water is located on one or more municipalities. Several possible cases: the body of water is located in one and only one municipality, the body of water is located in several municipalities Typically, the main (surface) type 2 hydroecoregion to which the body of water belongs will be specified. A body of water may be associated with a body of water or none. Conversely, a body of water may consist of one (general case) or several bodies of water (special case).
