Regular carriage at sea (resolution 1 minute of degree *1 minute of degree)
Description
The implementation of public policies dedicated to the management of the marine environment overseas and in metropolitan France requires the mobilization and analysis of numerous descriptive data on the environment and human activities.
In order to be able to analyse these data jointly, it is useful to have a continuous and regular grid on the marine domain. Thus, Cerema and the French Agency for Biodiversity have developed a regular carroyage of 1 minute of degree by 1 minute of degree, with the possibility of declining it to smaller scales. This layer covers the maritime space of the metropolis and the five overseas territories (Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Mayotte and Réunion) and their surroundings.
The objective of this carroyage is to allow the structuring, aggregation and synthesis of data in clearly delimited and known geographical units. Thus, it will be possible to map in a homogeneous way environmental processes, biological and ecological compartments, human activities and social and economic parameters. Ultimately, the analysis of the gridded data can produce in a relatively rational and repeatable way the elements necessary for the location, description and understanding of the challenges of the marine space.
The carroyage is in perfect geometric coherence with existing standards such as the MARSDEN carroyage, the statistical rectangles of the Fishery Information System and ICES, the FAO fishing zones and the Valpena carroyage.
The construction of this grid is also part of the process initiated by the GIMeL working group (geoinformation for the sea and the coast) aimed at setting up reference geographical information on the French marine and coastal space.
