Preliminary Assessment of Flood Risks (EPRI) - Past Events (1993-2016)

Description

This data layer includes the areas in Wallonia that suffered at least one significant flood event within the meaning of the Flood Directive between 1993 and 2016. Directive 2007/60/EC, known as the Floods Directive (FD), lays down provisions for the assessment and management of flood risks. It requires each Member State to carry out a Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment (PFRA) within its territory. This preliminary assessment must make it possible to identify areas at significant potential flood risk in Wallonia and, therefore, to draw up flood risk management plans. The EPRI is based, inter alia, on the historical floods that took place in Wallonia, which have a real probability of recurrence in the future and which had a significant impact on human health, the environment, cultural heritage and economic activity at the time they occurred or did not occur but could have one if they were to occur again (DI - Art. 4.2.b). As a result, the areas affected by these historic floods (by overflow or runoff) were mapped. In order to standardize spatial information, the events are reported at the scale of the contributing watersheds of the PARIS sectors (see genealogy). The resulting data layer "PFRA - Past Events" is polygonal where each multi-polygon represents a flood event. In attributes are reported the date of the start and end of the event, its name, the type of flood, etc. The data layer indicates that all 262 municipalities in Wallonia experienced at least one flood event on their territory between 1993 and 2016, whether by overflowing rivers or by runoff.
