Flood hazard due to overflow and runoff

Description

This data layer gathers vector data for areas subject to flood hazard from river overflow and runoff. The flood hazard by overflow and runoff in its vector version covers the areas likely to be flooded to a greater or lesser extent and/or frequently, following the natural overflow of a watercourse and the concentration of stormwater runoff. Flood hazard is characterized by flood hazard values resulting from the combination of the recurrence (return period or occurrence) of flooding or rain causing runoff, and (ii) the extent of flooding or rain causing runoff (submersion depth or peak flow). Values can be very low, low, medium or high. Flood hazard therefore represents areas and axes where there is a likelihood of flooding, even in places where no flooding is historically known. Conversely, the absence of a hazard zone or axis cannot guarantee that this part of the territory is protected from flooding. Indeed, other types of flooding may occur than the overflow of watercourses or runoff included in this mapping. The flood hazard mapping, drawn up for the four river basin districts, was approved by the Walloon Government on 4 March 2021 (MB: 24/03/2021). This vector layer presents the information of the original raster layer. It allows certain specific cartographic treatments. This data can be used in specific GIS applications whose processing requires vector data.
