Likely and potential continuity forest

Mapping of continuity forests and forests that have the potential to meet the requirements for being continuity forests has been carried out in order to:
—Creating a knowledge base to identify and prioritise forest areas for inventories and formal protection.
—Create a geographical basis that can be used to describe green infrastructure and the connectivity of the forest landscape.

Continuity forest was mapped in 2015 throughout the Boreal region and in four areas this mapping is specified. Mapping 2015 was carried out using automated methods. Clarification has been carried out as the 2015 mapping overestimates the presence of continuity forest. Clarification was carried out through visual interpretation of older and current orthophotos in Västernorrland (2016), Jämtland (2017), Västerbotten (2018), the mountain region (2019), Norrbotten (2022) and Dalarna (2022).

The 2015 mapping and subsequent clarifications are merged into one layer “Probable and potential continuity forest”.
