Sensitive natural areas (ENS) in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle (54)

Description

The Meurthe-et-Moselle County Council is, at national level, one of the most advanced departments in terms of the development, preservation and opening to the public of its sensitive natural areas. The strategy aims at the conservation of exceptional territories, pedagogy, training and employment, as well as tourism. 12 departmental ENS sites are directly managed by the departmental council of Meurthe-et-Moselle. Discovery routes are already proposed in the Meine Forest Massif, the Wild Meurthe Valley and the Tourbière de la Basse St-Jean in Bertrichamps. Others will be in the Marais de Droitaumont (Jarny) or Vallon de Bellefontaine (Champigneulles) tomorrow. In total, there are 70 ENS sites protected in partnership with the Conservatoire d’Espaces Naturels de Lorraine and the pilot local authorities, i.e. 800 ha of land in the department. More than 1 020 school events and 195 ‘general public’ events are organised each year. They promote the discovery of the Sensitive Natural Spaces of Meurthe-et-Moselle. The SNEs cover 5% of the departmental territory (28,000 hectares).
