Strategic Direction 2023 (SD23) Measure HE.E.5.a reports the number of buildings, roadways, and properties whose flood risk has decreased due to City efforts. Flooding occurs during storms when creeks overflow their banks or when the capacity of older storm drains and small channels is overwhelmed. The Watershed Protection Department helps reduce flood risk through the implementation of structural solutions like detention ponds, low water crossing upgrades, and storm drain improvements. The department also uses non-structural solutions like buyouts of properties with severe flood risk.
