Solar train, a train powered by solar energy

Groningen aims to be the most sustainable city in the Netherlands by 2025. To achieve this, a number of projects have already been started by the municipality, by external parties, or by a combination of both; This will continue in the future. Recently, the municipality of Groningen was approached by an entrepreneur with an idea that could possibly fit within the framework of the aforementioned objective. This idea concerns a solar-powered train, in the future called a solar train, which should be put down as a tourist attraction in the city of Groningen. Contrary to the image that the word train will evoke for many, this is a train on wheels instead of on rails.
The entrepreneur came up with this idea after seeing such a train run in Maastricht. Due to situational differences between Maastricht and Groningen and technological developments, this concept cannot simply be copied. It is therefore necessary that all relevant aspects relating to a solar train in Groningen are made clear before a decision can be made on its passage. This is also the objective of the feasibility study that has been elaborated in this report. The commission for this research was given by the municipality of Groningen.
The result of this study is a conclusion regarding the feasibility of a solar train, based on both qualitative and quantitative analyses. The analyses made aim to provide insight into practical, technical and economic aspects. The basis and the way in which the data is collected are parts of the research design.
