Pride, trend and tradition in the North
The connection between innovation, culture and identity in the Northern Netherlands economy.
The three northern provinces have a lot in common. In cultural terms, the North is generally less religious, less traditional, less hierarchical and more egalitarian compared to the Netherlands. The strongest is that in regions with a history colored by socialism or communism. However, there are also areas that are mainly Protestant conservative. In addition to all kinds of differences, the three provinces have a common history, there is something like a northern identity and culture, and there are similar economic characteristics in the North.
From an economic point of view, the North has traditionally been characterised by the importance of agriculture and agriculture-related industries – such as the dairy industry, the potato starch industry and the cardboard industry. Nevertheless, the northern economy is by no means an agricultural economy. As in the Netherlands, the service sector is the largest sector. The North is a ‘rare economy’ with a small and less
purchasing power of the population and therefore a smaller market of its own.
The North has been receiving regional economic support from the government for several decades (and
Europe). Macroeconomic data show that the North was lagging behind and has: regional gross domestic product and income are lower, and unemployment is higher than national.
