Description
In the summer of 2005, the Province of Groningen embarked on a special project with a large number of parties: Concrete Steps towards a Sustainable Ems Delta (Costa Due). The project is fully in line with the objectives of Energy Valley, the joint initiative of private and public parties in the Northern Netherlands to use the energy sector for economic strengthening.
In Costa Due, relevant market parties, industry organizations, governments and knowledge institutions have jointly investigated the possibilities for biomass activities in the Ems Delta. How can we use new bioenergy and bioraw materials technologies to create more jobs, reduce CO2 emissions and reduce the use of non-renewable resources? That question was central to Costa Due and the answers were sought through an unusual process – a so-called ‘stakeholder dialogue’.
As participants in Costa Due, we are now taking stock of a year and a half of dialogue, exploration and discovery. We see new opportunities in the Ems Delta and we are going to take them! we will have to limit CO2 emissions. But the desire to be less dependent in our energy supply also plays a role. The Ems Delta, the industrial centre of gravity of the Energy Valley, is ideally suited to link that ambition with economic growth.
