Description
The Social Support Act (WMO) was adopted by the House of Representatives on 14 February 2006. More personal responsibility in healthcare, less self-evidently leaning on the government. That is what the government is aiming for with the introduction of the WMO. The plans for the WMO are in line with the government's core objective: Encouraging citizens' own responsibility. This means that the municipalities must make it possible for all residents to participate in society.
A number of performance fields have been drawn up on which the municipality must formulate policy. The WMO defines ‘social support’ in nine performance fields:
1. promoting social cohesion and quality of life in villages and neighbourhoods;
2. prevention-oriented support for young people with problems growing up and for parents with problems raising children;
3. providing information, advice and customer support
4. supporting informal care and volunteers;
5. promoting the participation in society and the independent functioning of people with disabilities or a chronic psychological problem and of people with a psychosocial problem;
6. the provision of facilities to people with a disability or a chronic psychological problem and to people with a psychosocial problem in order to maintain their independent functioning or their participation in society;
7. the provision of social care, including women's care;
8. the promotion of public mental health services, with the exception of the provision of psychosocial assistance in the event of disasters;
9. promoting addiction policies.
