New public transport (Regiotram)

Description

In the National Urban Network Groningen-Assen, most facilities and most workplaces are concentrated in the city of Groningen. There are 125,000 jobs. In the regional economy, the city is undisputedly the centre of gravity. Partly thanks to the region, from which 160,000 people go to the city every day to work, study or visit facilities. 74% of them take the car. As a driver or as a passenger. With more and more cars in the city, a scarcity problem is growing to serious proportions. The city is becoming increasingly difficult to reach. This can become a blockade for the economic development of the city and region. Because the city and region want to prevent both, the Regional Vision Groningen-Assen 2030 has been drawn up. The Regional Vision assumes two carriers for regional accessibility: the T-structure A7 – A28 and a good and comprehensive system of regional public transport, a high-quality public transport network called Kolibri. This note motivates why and how this design should be translated into transport in the city itself, in order to cope with an imminent economic blockage.
