More homes for the elderly in sight
Description
In front of you is the third study on local elderly housing policy, which the elderly organisations ANBO for over-50s, PCOB and Unie KBO have commissioned since 1998. Providing good and suitable housing for the elderly remains a topical matter. For this reason alone, it is important to repeat such an investigation on a regular basis. This time, the research is also closely related to a project jointly initiated by ANBO, PCOB and Unie KBO, entitled ‘Meer Woningen voor Ouderen’ (More Homes for the Elderly). That project should lead to older lobbyists working across the country, if possible in every municipality, to advocate with their municipality that more suitable homes for the elderly are built, and in suitable places. And even if the municipality has already done so, it remains important to keep your finger on the pulse: ‘Do the facilities remain up to date? Is the living environment safe?’
This research is therefore partly intended to make the municipalities aware of the importance of the subject. This research may be the starting point or subject of discussion between the municipality and the lobbyist(s). This is certainly necessary, because there is still a huge shortage of housing suitable for the elderly and demand is only increasing due to the ageing of the population.
Cooperation between the various parties (elderly people, municipalities, housing corporations and organisations in the field of housing and care) is a prerequisite for achieving results. That list of parties would also be expandable: think of project developers, but also of young people who want a nice place of their own. However, good cooperation is only possible when all parties want it, and when the parties also have a similar starting position. If older people want to be able to talk to the municipality and other parties, older people must also be given the opportunity to do so, to be facilitated. Because municipal elderly housing policy without the elderly being involved in a good way, that is not possible.
