Description

The future of higher education in Groningen is a common concern of the University of Groningen (RUG), the Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen (HG) and the Municipality of Groningen. In 2004, the Executive Councils of the University of Groningen, HG and the Municipality contemplated a joint agenda for the next five years in three working meetings. An agenda aimed at securing Groningen's position as the knowledge and innovation city of the North in the longer term. A strong city has an appearance to a much larger area. For employment in the Northern region, for social cohesion, for the attractiveness of Groningen as a city of residence, work and study, the further development of the knowledge infrastructure of this city is of great importance. The outcome of the three working meetings is that the three parties commit themselves to this development and do so in unison, with one vision, a common agenda until 2010, and shared investments. The Municipality thus indicates that it considers cooperation with knowledge institutions to be of the utmost importance for the competitiveness of the region. The two educational institutions underline that they consider themselves to be ‘knowledge-based social enterprises’ that want to make a maximum contribution to the development of the Northern region. We think these mutual connections are important enough to give this document, which is the result of the discussions, the title of the Groningen Agreement. This is by no means to say that the joint efforts are ‘ready’; it is now important to implement the Accord and to further broaden the support for a joint innovation policy to companies and other knowledge institutions.
