Retail and quality of life

Description

A large number of regions and municipalities in the Netherlands have or will have to deal with a decreasing number of inhabitants. In combination with hazing, ageing and a declining (potential) labour force, this has an effect on the quality of life in these areas. Together with the VNG and the IPO, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations is committed to making and keeping top shrinkage and anticipation areas livable (see, among other things, the Inter-administrative Action Plan on Population Decline ‘Crimping with Quality’). In consultation with the provinces and regions concerned, seven shrinkage areas and sixteen anticipation areas have been designated. The aim of the policy is to counteract the negative effects of demographic change on the quality of life in the shrinkage and anticipation areas. These impacts occur in different areas, which can be summarised in three pillars: housing and space, economic vitality and facilities. In addition to healthcare and education, retail is one of the basic services within the Services pillar. The aim of this research is to gain insight into the relationship between demographic change and retail, and into the influence of retail on the quality of life in shrinkage and anticipation areas.
